Pneumatics Workshop

Knowledge of pneumatic components and the ability to read and understand the working of a starting / reversing maneuvering circuit of the Main Engine is essential to be able to troubleshoot and analyze maneuvering faults logically. 

Covering aspects of shipboard pneumatics, this workshop provides a forum for theory lecture delivery, PPT presentations, animation / videos and group discussions leading to improvement in competency and confidence in operating pneumatic equipment in a correct manner. Extensive exposure to pneumatic components and their application is provided along with several shipboard circuits being traced. Thus, the ability to trace, understand and analyze circuit drawings and to troubleshoot logically is gained by the participant. 

The objective of the course is to:  

  • Enable the participants to recognize pneumatic components and read / understand pneumatic circuits.
  • To familiarize with a Main Engine starting / reversing maneuvering circuit.  
  • To recognize component symbols and their construction, functioning and applications. 
  • To learn through sharing of experiences amongst participants 

 

Program Contents

  • Introduction to Pneumatic components, types of Direction and Flow Control valves, their symbols and how to “read” them.
  • Tracing and detailed explanation of the Pneumatic Manoeuvring circuit of the MAN B&W MC Main Engine and the various control components thereof.

Hoshang Dastur

Mr. Hoshang Dastur is a Class I Marine Engineer holding both Motor and Steam licenses. He completed his Marine Engineering training from Mazagon Docks Ltd. and subsequently sailed with Jay Shree Shipping and later, with Barber (now Wilhelmsen) Ship Management.

He is a certified trainer with 16 years of sailing experience and 21 years of training experience at the International Maritime Training Center (IMTC), which he had been heading since 2015.

He has been associated with IMTC since its very inception and had, in no small measure, contributed immensely towards making IMTC one of the leading Institutes conducting value-added training in the country.

Besides having an in-depth knowledge of Marine Engineering subjects, Mr. Dastur has done extensive work in the field of Hydraulics & Pneumatics, and developed expertise in Control Systems and Engine - Room Simulators. 

He has received training by NABCO of Japan and by Kongsberg (Norcontrol) of Norway in Main Engine Manoeuvring Control systems and conducts training in this field as also in Hydraulics. 

He is also on the panel of external examiners nominated by the Director-General of Shipping, Government of India for conducting the oral examination of Engineers.
